Keyless door locks are fast taking over the lock business when it comes to homes and establishments. Every house is slowly transitioning to smart homes, and keyless door locks are trending among homeowners.
They are efficient, reliable, add a modern touch to any building through its electronic features, and they’re a great fit for the current lifestyle of many home and business owners today.
There is also a host of other advantages that you can enjoy with keyless door locks as they have their own edge over the more conventional lock-and-key system that has long been in place for nearly all establishments ever built.
Locks and keys have maintained their partnership throughout the centuries; this partnership is one that has been successful, albeit not perfect. There are still a few holes that you have to consider – a few difficulties – when it comes to lock and key: the danger of lost or stolen keys, the difficulty of passing keys to those who may need them whenever you are away, and the inconvenience of having to carry around and dig out a piece of metal every day when you get out of and come back to your house.
That is most likely why keyless door locks have become such a thing these days. So much so that more and more manufacturers have sprung forth and made their own versions. Because there are so many available on the market today, their mechanisms may differ.
One difference that you may notice is how to open keyless door locks. There are a variety of ways for a variety of locks, but most commonly, keyless door locks unlock with a code and have a keypad where you can input that code. Below are a few steps on how to open these electronic locks that are applicable to many brands:
This is applicable for keyless door locks with a touchscreen feature. It is likely that the touchscreen will not remain alight and activate all the time as this will make it consume too much unnecessary power.
What many touchscreen pads do is that they go into hibernation or sleep mode, which blacks out the screen until you activate it to input your code. If you have a regular keypad and not a touchscreen on your keyless lock, you may skip this step and move onto the next.
This is different from activating the screen itself. It is vital to activate your keypad on how to open keyless door locks so that you can input your passcode.
For some touchscreen models, after having activated your screen, a few buttons or numbers appear on the screen that you may press in order to activate the keypad. For regular keys, there might be an activation button that “wakes” the unit so that you can input your code.
Once you have finally activated your screen and/or your keypad, you may now input your access code. Usually, these codes consist of four to six numbers of your choice.
Note that if your device is new, it may come with a default manufacturer’s code, which would be wise to change as soon as you install it in your establishment.
Once you finish putting in your code, the unit will automatically unlock and you may enter. For some units, you will hear a click; for others, you may hear a very light buzz as it draws back the bolts. There are also numerous other units that boast of an ultra-silent operation so you wouldn’t hear a thing as it unlocks.
Usually, you will find a lock button on your keypad and a push of this button will immediately lock your unit and secure your home. Make sure to lock your door once you get inside your home and once you leave it.
Without making sure to lock your unit, your keyless lock will be unable to protect you and your property from intruders or theft, and renders your unit practically useless.
Those are only the simplest and the most common ways how to open keyless door locks. There is surely some variation between brands and unit models, so make sure to read up on your own lock’s user guide for a smooth and scuff-free use.
